Denise Mutamba, along with co-counsel, won more than $40,000 for a group of low-income tenants who were forced out of their extended-stay motel room by unethical landlords. The tenants, some of whom are disabled, had been living in squalor for many years at the Breezeway Inn in Lake Worth, FL. Their rooms were so infested with roaches and bedbugs that one tenant’s children had to be taken to the hospital. Although utilities were included in the rent, the landlords often failed to pay the bill leaving the tenants without essential services.
A jury found that the landlords violating Fair Housing, landlord-tenant, and contact law and awarded the tenants back rent, damages for emotional distress, and attorneys fees and costs.
